To reheat, warm in a pan over medium heat or in the microwave, adding a splash of water if needed.

Helpful Tips

- Use Low-Sodium Soy Sauce to help control the saltiness of the dish.
- To avoid overcooking the broccoli, add it at the end to keep it bright and crisp.
- Adjust the Sweetness to your liking. If you prefer less sweetness, reduce the brown sugar slightly.
FAQs
Yes! Add it in the last 15 minutes of cooking so it doesn’t get too soft.
Flank steak and sirloin work best, but chuck roast is a budget-friendly option.
Absolutely! Use gluten-free soy sauce or tamari instead of regular soy sauce.
You can transfer some of the sauce to a sauce pan and simmer on medium heat till it thickens to your desired consistency then transfer back to the slow cooker.
If you don't want to do that, add an extra teaspoon of cornstarch to the sauce mixture before cooking.
You can also cook uncovered for a few extra minutes.
However, my recommendation is to cook this recipe as is first then make these adjustments if needed next time you are making this recipe.

Crockpot Beef and Broccoli
Equipment
- 7 qt slow cooker
Ingredients
- 2 pounds sirloin steak (cut into thin strips)
- 1 cup beef consommé (or beef broth)
- ½ cup low sodium soy sauce
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- 4 cloves garlic (minced)
- 2 teaspoons Freshly grated ginger (optional)
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons sesame oil
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 3 to 4 cups broccoli florets (see note 5)
- Sliced green onions (for garnish)
- Sesame seeds (for garnish)
Serving suggestions:
- over white rice
Instructions
- Arrange the sliced sirloin steak in the slow cooker.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the beef consommé (or broth), low-sodium soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, cornstarch, sesame oil, onion powder, and black pepper. Stir well until fully blended, then pour the mixture over the beef.
- Secure the lid and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours or HIGH for 3-4 hours, until the beef is tender and fully cooked.
- In the final 30 minutes of cooking, add the broccoli florets and stir them into the sauce. Increase the heat to HIGH, cover, and cook until the broccoli softens to your liking.
- Sprinkle with sliced green onions and sesame seeds before serving. Enjoy over white rice!
Notes
- Other great beef options include flank steak, skirt steak, flat iron steak, or chuck. Always slice against the grain and keep the pieces no thicker than ½ inch for the best texture.
- Prefer a sweeter sauce? Increase the brown sugar to ½ cup instead of ⅓ cup. Taste and adjust before adding the cornstarch.
- Cooking on low heat for a longer time will yield the most tender beef.
- If using the high setting, monitor the slow cooker to prevent the sauce from thickening too much or burning at the edges.
- Want more broccoli? Use up to 4 cups, want less? Use 3 cups.
- Since slow cookers vary, the sauce may not always thicken as expected. If needed, transfer some sauce to a saucepan and simmer over medium heat until it reaches the desired consistency. Then, pour it back into the slow cooker and mix with the beef and broccoli.
