How to make reindeer Oreos
Start by lining a baking sheet with parchment paper. Crush Oreo cookies into fine crumbs using a food processor, beat the cream cheese with a hand mixer.
Mix the crumbs with softened cream cheese until smooth.
Use a 1.5 inch cookie scoop to form even-sized balls, roll them between your hands for smoothness, and place them on the baking sheet.
Chill the balls in the fridge for about an hour or two to set.
Next, melt dark chocolate wafers in a double boiler or microwave until smooth. Dip each chilled Oreo ball in the melted chocolate, letting any excess drip off.
then place it back on the lined baking sheet. Press two pretzel pieces into each ball to form antlers, add a Red Hot candy for the nose, and stick on two candy eyes above it.
Allow the reindeer Oreo balls to fully set for 15 minutes (or refrigerate to speed up hardening) before serving. Store them in the fridge until ready to enjoy!
How to store
To keep your reindeer Oreo balls fresh, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They can last up to a week when properly stored.
If you want to prepare them in advance, they can also be frozen for up to two months. Simply thaw them in the fridge before serving.
Helpful Tips
- Chill the Dough: After mixing the Oreo crumbs and cream cheese, chill the mixture for at least 30 minutes before rolling into balls. This makes the process easier and less messy.
- Use Melting Wafers: For smoother, shinier chocolate coating, opt for melting wafers or candy melts instead of regular chocolate.
- Work in Batches: When dipping the balls in chocolate, work with small batches to prevent the mixture from softening too quickly.
- Have Fun with Decorations: Don’t worry if the reindeers aren’t perfect, part of the fun is in their unique look!
FAQs
Yes! You can experiment with different flavors like peppermint or chocolate to add variety to your Christmas Oreo balls.
Cracking usually happens when there is rapid change in temperature. If the balls are too cold or the chocolate is too warm, making the cookie balls crack as they set.
To avoid this, let the cold balls sit out for a minute before dipping, and ensure your melted chocolate is not too hot.
Absolutely! You can make reindeer Oreo balls a few days ahead of time and store them in the fridge, or freeze them for longer storage.

Reindeer Oreo balls
Equipment
- Food processor or high speed blender
- Hand mixer
- Baking tray
- Candy melt melting pot, double boiler, or microwave
Ingredients
- 45 Oreo Cookies
- 8 ounce cream cheese (softened to room temperature)
- 2 cups pretzel twists (broken in half)
- 15 ounces Ghirardelli dark chocolate melting wafers
- Black sugar pearls (for the eyes)
- Red Hots (for the nose)
Instructions
- Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper; set aside.
- Pulse the Oreo cookies in a food processor or high-speed blender until they form fine crumbs.
- In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese on high with a hand mixer until smooth and creamy.
- Add the Oreo crumbs to the bowl and mix on medium speed until the ingredients are fully combined.
- Using a 1.5-inch cookie scoop, portion out even balls of the mixture, then roll each one between your palms to smooth them. Place each ball on the prepared baking sheet.
- After all balls are formed, place the baking sheet in the refrigerator and chill for about 2 hours.
- Melt the dark chocolate wafers in a double boiler over low heat, or microwave in a microwave-safe bowl on a low setting, stirring every 30 seconds, until completely melted and smooth.
- Using a fork, dip each Oreo ball into the melted chocolate, allowing any excess to drip off by tapping the fork on the bowl’s edge. Place each coated ball back on the baking sheet.
- Insert two small pretzel pieces as antlers, pressing them about ¼ to ½ inch into each ball.
- For the nose, press a Red Hot candy onto the front of each ball and hold it for about 10 seconds to help it set. Then add two candy eyes just above the nose.
- Repeat this process for the remaining Oreo balls. Re-melt the dark chocolate as needed if it begins to harden.
- Let the reindeer Oreo balls sit for about 15 minutes, or until fully set.
- For quicker hardening, refrigerate them until firm. Keep them chilled until you’re ready to serve. Enjoy!
Notes
- Any Oreo flavor works for this recipe. However, If using Double Stuf or Mega Stuf Oreos, which contain more cream, the balls may turn out softer. You may want to use a bit less cream cheese or remove the filling from half of the cookies if using these varieties.
- For the eyes, you can use black sugar pearls or pipe with black candy melts. For the nose, try using red M&M’s or another red cinnamon candy like Hot Tamales instead of Red Hots.
