How to cook penne pasta
There are two main ways to cook penne pasta: as a stand-alone dish, where you toss it with sauces like hearty marinara or Alfredo, or cooked in one-pot recipes like smoked sausage pasta, where the pasta simmers directly in the sauce or broth with other ingredients.
As a stand alone dish
Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Using plenty of water helps the pasta cook evenly and prevents sticking.
Once the water is boiling, add salt. This flavors the pasta as it cooks. A good rule of thumb is about 1–2 tablespoons per pound of pasta.
Add the penne pasta to the boiling water and stir immediately to prevent sticking.

Cook for 10–12 minutes for al dente texture. Drain with a colander and add to the sauce you are cooking.

In a one pot dish:
If you’re making a one-pot meal, add the penne directly to the sauce or broth along with other ingredients.

Stir occasionally and cook for up to 25 minutes, depending on the recipe.

Check for doneness toward the end the pasta should be tender but not mushy.
This longer cooking time allows the penne to absorb the flavors of the dish while cooking evenly.

Serve with
- Garlic bread or focaccia
- A fresh green salad
- Grilled or roasted vegetables
- Protein like chicken, shrimp, or meatballs

Storing and reheating leftovers
Storage
- Refrigerator: Place cooked pasta in an airtight container. It will keep for 3–5 days. If it’s mixed with sauce, the same timeline applies.
- Freezer: Cooked pasta can be frozen in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 2 months. If freezing with sauce, slightly undercook the pasta first so it doesn’t get mushy when reheated.
Reheating Cooked Penne Pasta
- Stovetop: Heat pasta in a pan over medium heat. Add a splash of water, broth, or sauce to prevent it from drying out.
- Microwave: Place pasta in a microwave-safe dish, cover loosely, and heat in 1–2 minute intervals, stirring in between. Add a little water or sauce if needed.
- One-pot dishes: Reheat slowly over low-medium heat, stirring occasionally, to evenly warm the pasta and sauce my
Quick Tip: If pasta seems a little dry after storage, toss it with a small amount of olive oil, butter and or water to restore moisture.

Helpful Tips
- Reserve some pasta water: A cup of starchy water can help loosen thick sauces and make them cling better.
- Stir pasta once it gets into the boiling water and occasionally after that.
- Don’t overcook the pasta. It will become mushy and will lose its shape if you do.
- For a subtle taste boost, add a splash of olive oil or a pinch of herbs to the boiling water.
- If you’re cooking penne in a one-pot recipe, it usually takes 20-25 minutes for the pasta to fully cook in the sauce. Stir occasionally and check for doneness toward the end.
FAQs
Most penne pasta cooks in 10–12 minutes for al dente, depending on the brand and type (regular, whole wheat, or gluten-free). Start tasting a minute or two before the suggested time to make sure it’s firm but cooked through.
Usually, no. Rinsing removes the starch that helps sauces stick. Only rinse if you’re making a cold pasta salad.
It’s optional. A small splash of olive oil can help prevent sticking, but frequent stirring is usually enough.
Salt the boiling water, reserve some pasta water to mix with your sauce, and toss the pasta immediately with your sauce.
