This is an overview of the recipe with step by step photos. Scroll down to end of post for a printable recipe card with the amount of ingredients and full recipe instructions.
Gather your choice of ingredients. I used a combination of avocados, tomato, onions, lime and salt.
Cut the avocados open and scoop the flesh out into a bowl or traditional guacamole mortar (👈 affiliate link)
Mash the avocados to your desired texture. It’s best not to be completely smooth.
Mix in the salt and lime juice then add the chopped onions and tomatoes. Stir till well combined. Serve with your favorite chips.
Variations
There are various ways to make a 4 ingredient cilantro. I’ll share some of the ways I swap out ingredients when making it.
- Make it without cilantro. Simply leave out cilantro from your ingredient list especially if you do not like cilantro.
- Use Salsa: A simple mix of salsa, avocados salt and lime juice makes an easy dip.
- Use a can Rotel tomatoes and chili: like the recipe above, a can of rotel + 3 avocados, salt and lime juice and sometimes onions too.
- Leave out the tomatoes and just mash your avocados, add salt, lime juice and onions.
What to serve with guacamole
Guacamole goes with all kinds of chips such as tortilla chips, corn chips like Fritos, whole wheat chips and lots more.
If you are looking what to serve with this condiment besides chips, this walking taco casserole is top on my list and of course Mexican chicken Salad, as a filling for sandwiches and also as a topping for tacos or quesadillas! Here's an easy cheese quesadilla recipe if you need one.
How to store properly
The best way to store guacamole is by topping it with water and storing in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Wondering why?
Oxidation is the reason why guacamole turns brown. When avocados are exposed to air for a while they begin to brown.
Helpful Tips
- Mix and match ingredients based on what you have in your pantry.
- Use ripe but firm avocados.
- Guacamole is best served at room temperature on the day it’s made.
FAQs
The 4 main ingredients in a basic guacamole are ripe avocados, lime juice, salt, and onion (white, red or green onions work).
Look for avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure when you squeeze them. They should be darker in color but not overly soft or mushy. Avoid hard, green unripe avocados.
Cover the top of the guacamole with water and keep in the refrigerator. The water will prevent oxidation which is what causes the browning.
Alternatively Squeeze enough lime juice over the guacamole to fully coat the surface. The acidity in the lime juice helps prevent oxidation.
You can also press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole. My favorite most effective method is the water method.
Popular options are diced tomatoes, minced garlic, chopped cilantro, diced jalapeños or other chiles, cumin, and a pinch of cayenne pepper for some heat.
