    How to cook egg noodles

    Egg noodles are a good alternative to pasta that’s usually served with a variety of sauces and proteins. Learn how to cook egg noodles in easy steps to use in all your recipes that require precooked noodles.

    We usually serve this with Crock pot cube steak and use it in our Tuna noodle casserole and many more recipes.

    What are egg noodles?

    Egg noodles are made from wheat flour and eggs, occasionally with salt added. They come in several shapes like spaghetti strands, lasagna sheets, or wide cut ribbons. Egg noodles have a rich, taste and texture. Their higher egg content helps them hold their shape better when cooked.

    We’ll show you how to boil egg noodles on the stove top, in the instant pot, microwave or in a slow cooker. All methods are easy so feel free to use any one that suits you.

    How to boil egg noodles

    This is an overview of the recipe with step by step photos. Scroll down to end of post for a printable recipe card with the amount of ingredients and full recipe instructions.

    On the stove top

    Add salt to 6 quarts of water and bring to boil.

    Add the noodles to the boiling water and cook for 7 to 10 minutes. For al dente texture start checking at 7 mins.

    In the instant pot

    Put noodles in the inner pot of the instant pot. Add salt to the pot then pour 2 cups of water over the noodles.

    Cover instant pot and turn valve to sealing position. Cook on high for 2 mins before doing a quick release.

    In the crock pot

    Dump all the ingredients in the slow cooker. Cook on high for 15 to 20 mins.

    In the microwave

    Put noodles in a tall microwave safe bowl, add water (2 cups of water to ½ cup of noodles) microwave on high for 5 to 6 minutes. Check and stir halfway through. Gently remove and drain when noodles are cooked through.

    What to serve with noodles

    Now that we’ve learnt how to cook egg noodles in a variety of ways, the next you’d want to know is how to serve.

    Boiled eggs noodles are usually served with sauces and stews. Some of our favorites include Instant pot chicken masala, Beef stew, slow cooker cube steak, chop suey etc.

    You can also use in recipes that call for precooked noodles.

    Storage instructions

    If you aren’t serving boiled noodles immediately, toss in some butter or olive oil to keep it from sticking then let it cool completely.

    Refrigerate: Transfer to an airtight container (preferably a microwave safe one) and refrigerate for up to 5days

    Reheat: add a spa of water to the noodles and microwave at 30 secs intervals till warmed through.

    Helpful Tips

    • Don't overcook! Egg noodles turn to mush if boiled too long. Start checking for doneness at least 1 minute early.
    • Add a touch of oil or butter to cooked noodles to prevent sticking especially if you aren making ahead to store of if you aren’t ready to be serve.
    • I used wide egg noodles. Thinner noodles will cook in less time. Kindly adjust accordingly.
    • Avoid rinsing noodles so the sauce sticks to the noodles.
    • If you are cooking fresh egg noodles it will take 3 to 5 minutes.

    Are noodles pasta?

    While similar, traditional pasta typically uses just flour and water while egg noodles add eggs for richness.

    Are egg noodles gluten free?

Alternatively you can opt for rice noodles instead. You should ensure to read the labels to know if the egg noodles are actually gluten free.

    What's a good egg noodle substitute?

    You can sub regular pasta, udon noodles, ramen noodles or rice vermicelli.

    For the stovetop, egg noodles typically need to be boiled for 7 to 10 minutes until they reach the desired tenderness.

    Ingredients
      

    • 16 oz wide egg noodles
    • 6 quart water
    • 1 tablespoon salt

    Instructions
     

    • Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil, add salt, then add noodles into the pot.
    • Give noodles a stir to prevent sticking. Cook wide egg noodles for 8 to 10 mins while thinner strands take 4 to 6 mins.
    • Drain noodles well and add to dishes as needed.
