Line a large baking tray with parchment paper and keep it nearby for quick use.
Make the Oreo Chicks
Melt the yellow candy melts, using a double boiler over low heat or in the microwave in short intervals, stirring often until smooth. (If using white candy melts, once smooth, mix in yellow food coloring until you reach your desired shade.)
Dip the cookies
Place an Oreo on a fork, dip it fully into the yellow coating, lift it out, and gently tap off the excess. Set it on the prepared tray.
Repeat with a few cookies at a time, working quickly before the coating firms up.
Decorate the chicks
While the coating is still soft, add two black pearls for eyes.
Place an orange heart in the center for the beak and two more near the bottom for feet.
Add a few orange jimmies on top for hair, then press a halved yellow M&M on each side for wings.
Continue in batches. Repeat dipping and decorating until all chick cookies are done, stirring the melted wafers as needed to keep them smooth.
Melt and color for the Oreo eggs
For the pink eggs, melt about a cup of white candy melts and tint with pink coloring. Dip several Oreos, let excess drip off, and place on the tray. Leave them plain for now.
For the blue eggs, melt another cup of melts, tint blue, and repeat the dipping process with the remaining Oreos.
Decorate the Eggs
To decorate and drizzle, melt about ½ cup of melts in a piping bag.
Snip a small opening and drizzle over the pink and blue cookies. Immediately sprinkle with nonpareils before the drizzle sets.
Set the coating
Refrigerate the tray for 10 to 15 minutes, or until all coatings are firm and ready to serve.
Notes
Use oil-based coloring only because regular food coloring can cause the melting wafers to thicken or seize.
High heat makes the coating clumpy and harder to work with. Slow melting gives a smoother finish.
Work in small batches to keep the coating from setting before decorating is finished.
The egg colors can be changed to match any holiday or theme.
Try different Oreos; Classic, Golden, or flavored varieties all work well.
Use tweezers for details. This is helpful for placing small sprinkles neatly without smudging the coating.
Pre-colored candy melts can save time and skip the coloring step.
